The hippy picnic

Last summer I hosted an impromptu picnic which became known as the hippy picnic. A few friends and their kids came over and we spent the afternoon tie dying, making friendship bracelets, eating and frolicking. It was a near perfect holiday day. The kids were happy and the drama was non-existent. The vibes were totally groovy.

So it came as no surprise to anyone that I was looking to do another Hippy Picnic this summer. We are in a different house with a slightly different set up and one of the things I wanted to add this year was a photo booth. If you are an avid Pinterest nut like me then you’ll know that you can literally do a photo booth for any reason if you have the inspiration and the time. All you need is a theme, and having peace and love as a running theme made it easy to have fun with this one.

I’m not above buying ready made props particularly if you are pushed for time but it is much more fun to make your own.

If you are interested to know how these are made let me know and I’ll do a separate post with detailed instructions.

I was really keen to keep the tie dye element to the day but for whatever reason it just didn’t happen this time around. I now have a fair few boxes and sachets of dye which are now sitting in my laundry cupboard waiting for the day I go nuts and re do the colours of my entire wardrobe 🙂 One thing I took away from this though was that you can plan out a day with amazing precision but ultimately it’s the kids that decide what you are going to do.

I also tried my hand at face painting and I’m not going to lie, it was challenging. I loved doing it but I learnt quickly to stop getting too fancy, use sponges more and girls are happy with any design as long as it involves a glitter finish. That, along side hair braiding, snacks and a braai was really all that was required.

In conclusion, we had a wonderful day, and I can see this becoming an annual tradition. So far each Hippy picnic has taught me different things. Next year is going to be epic 🙂
